“Slash Careers” Are Changing Employment Trends
As time marches forward, the world changes to meet the needs of technological, social, and economic developments. One area that's recently been shifting is employment. For instance, the “gig economy,” where employees are paid by companies to do temporary jobs, has been growing significantly. Now, another new term frequently showing up is “slash career.”
The “slash” refers to the “/” symbol, which is commonly used to replace “and.” People with slash careers don't confine themselves to one specific career. Instead, they have multiple jobs, describing themselves with the “/” symbol between titles. Marci Alboher, the woman who coined the term, goes by the title “journalist/ author/speaker” herself.
Some people benefit greatly from slash careers. Working multiple jobs allows people to widen their skill sets, making them more well-rounded and thus more desirable to future employers. Furthermore, people who lack fulfillment in their traditional jobs can take on other roles they're more passionate about. This can lead to a better work-life balance, since the time they spend pursuing their passions gives them a greater sense of intellectual or emotional contentment.
