The Magic and Mystery of Sweden's Troll

Last year, director Ali Abbasi released Border, the magical story of an airport worker who discovers she's a troll. An instant hit, this Swedish movie was praised for being completely original. However, the mythology that it's based on is nothing new. In fact, it may be as old as Sweden itself.

In Sweden, trolls have long filled people with fear and wonder. For centuries, it was believed these powerful creatures lived deep in the wild. They looked similar to humans and could be as tall as mountains. However, they could also turn themselves into rocks and trees to hide in plain sight.

At night, trolls would creep into local villages and steal away naughty children. One way to avoid this terrible fate was for the villagers to keep the trolls out in the open until morning. If this happened, they would freeze and turn into stone. Today, many large rocks across the country are believed to be former trolls. They're reminders of the monsters that Sweden will never forget.

There's Nothing Brilliant about Burnout

Work is going brilliantly, but you certainly don't feel brilliant. You're tired, exhausted even, and you're always getting sick. The doctors say nothing is wrong with you, but you certainly don't feel that way. What could possibly be the matter?

No, you're not imagining it—you're experiencing burnout. This condition affects people who are under a lot of pressure, often causing them to feel tired and helpless. Some cultures don't consider burnout a real problem. However, it can have serious effects on people's health, at times even resulting in panic attacks.

One problem with burnout is how we deal with it. When the pressure's on, many people respond by working harder and trying to “power through it.” However, this often makes things worse. Instead, experts suggest allowing ourselves time to recover from stress. Exercise, proper sleep, and social connections all help with this. If you find you're still sick with worry after all that, then maybe it's time for some bigger changes. Start putting yourself first and you'll soon give burnout the boot!

For Work or for Play, Beagles Can't Be Beat

One common modern use of beagles occurs at airports. With their powerful noses, they can sniff out drugs or bombs hidden in people's luggage. They're so good at finding things that they are even compared to X-ray machines. In addition to having such a great sense of smell, beagles are also small enough to move easily through crowds. What's more, they learn commands quickly. All these features make them excellent at the jobs they're employed to fulfill.

Beagles are also common pets, though the things that once made them ideal hunting dogs don't necessarily make them good pets. Beagles are athletic and energetic, and need to spend lots of time outside every day. Because they were bred to work, they need a good amount of exercise and will look for something to do if they aren't kept occupied. If they get bored, they will destroy things or try to escape from wherever they are kept, sometimes by digging holes under garden fences. Finally, beagles are known for their “baying,” a distinctive, loud howl that many people find very annoying.

Beagles aren't for everyone. However, for people who have the space and energy to keep up with them, there's nothing like this loveable brown dog.

“Slash Careers” Are Changing Employment Trends

As time marches forward, the world changes to meet the needs of technological, social, and economic developments. One area that's recently been shifting is employment. For instance, the “gig economy,” where employees are paid by companies to do temporary jobs, has been growing significantly. Now, another new term frequently showing up is “slash career.”

The “slash” refers to the “/” symbol, which is commonly used to replace “and.” People with slash careers don't confine themselves to one specific career. Instead, they have multiple jobs, describing themselves with the “/” symbol between titles. Marci Alboher, the woman who coined the term, goes by the title “journalist/ author/speaker” herself.

Some people benefit greatly from slash careers. Working multiple jobs allows people to widen their skill sets, making them more well-rounded and thus more desirable to future employers. Furthermore, people who lack fulfillment in their traditional jobs can take on other roles they're more passionate about. This can lead to a better work-life balance, since the time they spend pursuing their passions gives them a greater sense of intellectual or emotional contentment.
